The word "fragrance" means two opposite things depending on who is reading

· 21 Aug 2026

When CeraVe reviewers mention fragrance, 44.8 percent also mention irritation; for Dove and Tree Hut it is about 8 percent. The same word is a risk signal to one audience and the main reason to buy for another - so a fragrance-free claim is an asset in one register and a liability in the other.

The context

Fragrance-free is a growing beauty claim, justified on the grounds that fragrance is the leading cause of allergic contact dermatitis from cosmetics and that a large share of consumers self-describe as sensitive-skinned. That is real. What our data adds is that the word does not travel - it carries opposite meaning depending on the brand's audience. Across 2,916 US retailer reviews, of the reviews mentioning fragrance or scent at all, the share also mentioning irritation: CeraVe 44.8 percent (539 reviews, 33.8 percent any irritation mention); St Ives 22.9 percent (806 reviews, 11.7 percent); Dove 7.9 percent (866 reviews, 6.7 percent); Tree Hut 8.0 percent (705 reviews, 4.4 percent). For a CeraVe shopper, fragrance and irritation are close to the same conversation - raise one and you have raised the other. For a Dove or Tree Hut shopper they are unrelated: fragrance is pleasure, and the single most-discussed attribute they have (71 percent of Dove reviews mention scent). St Ives sits between at 22.9 percent. Where this could be wrong: co-occurrence in the same review is not causation - this measures how coupled the two concepts are in an audience's mind, which is the useful thing, but it is not evidence fragrance caused irritation. Keyword incidence, no severity weighting. US mass and masstige only; prestige and fine fragrance untested.
