Four beauty brands, four completely different reasons people give one star

· 21 Aug 2026

Across 222 one- and two-star reviews, each brand fails in a distinct and predictable way - Dove and Tree Hut on scent and packaging, CeraVe on irritation, St Ives on harshness and reformulation - which means objection-handling on a PDP has to be brand-specific, not category-generic.

We took the 222 reviews rated 1 or 2 stars out of 2,916 US retailer reviews and asked what each complains about. Share of that brand's bad reviews mentioning each theme (reviews can mention several). St Ives - 97 bad reviews: scent 8.2, irritation 16.5, packaging 5.2, reformulation 11.3, texture 4.1, price 3.1 percent. Tree Hut - 54 bad reviews: scent 48.1, irritation 9.3, packaging 31.5, reformulation 1.9, texture 5.6, price 7.4 percent. Dove - 43 bad reviews: scent 51.2, irritation 7.0, packaging 48.8, reformulation 9.3, texture 25.6, price 2.3 percent. CeraVe - 28 bad reviews: scent 3.6, irritation 57.1, packaging 21.4, reformulation 14.3, texture 7.1, price 0 percent. Each brand fails where it competes. Tree Hut and Dove sell on scent and sensory experience and roughly half their bad reviews are about smell. CeraVe sells dermatologist credibility and 57 percent of its bad reviews are skin reactions. The failure mode is the promise, inverted. Packaging is badly under-weighted. Nearly half of Dove's bad reviews mention the pump, bottle, cap or a leak, and a third of Tree Hut's do. Not a copy problem, not a formula problem, and invisible to anyone reading only the average rating. St Ives is the outlier and not in the way we guessed. Fewest scent complaints (8.2) and by far the fewest packaging complaints (5.2), so the two things that break its mass peers are not what break it. Widening the harshness read to include harsh, rough, scratchy and micro-tear alongside irritation terms takes it to 36 of 97 bad reviews - 37 percent. Separately 32 St Ives reviews mention reformulation, 11 of them negative. This corrects our own August report, which flagged the 12 percent dissatisfaction rate and hypothesised St Ives was inviting a proof expectation the product experience does not meet. The data does not support that. It is a product-experience and change-management problem - an abrasive scrub and a formula people believe was altered - not a claims problem. Where this could be wrong: CeraVe (28) and Dove (43) have small bad-review counts, so their percentages move several points on a handful of reviews - direction not precision; St Ives (97) and Tree Hut (54) are firmer. Keyword incidence, no severity weighting. Retailer reviews skew to strong reactions and packaging complaints may be inflated because a broken pump is concrete to write about. Reformulation captures a belief, not a verified fact.
